About Us
What began as a small initiative at this same location since 2021 has grown into a dedicated organization focused entirely on addressing the unique and growing demand for Halal food in our community. Recognizing the need for culturally appropriate food assistance, we established Halal Food Bank Canada as a separate entity in 2024 and began full operations after securing our not-for-profit status in October 2024. Halal Food Bank Canada got its charitable status on January 21st, 2025 [Charity number 705158954RR0001].
Halal Food Bank Canada was founded by Amna Saleem, who also serves as its President. As her brainchild, the initiative reflects her vision and commitment to addressing food insecurity in a culturally respectful way. Recognizing the value of community collaboration, she invited respected community leader Dr. Munir ElKassem to join the project, and he graciously accepted the role of Outreach Director, where he contributes his insight and experience to support the organization’s outreach efforts.
With the support of countless volunteers, donors, and local businesses, we’ve been able to serve a rapidly growing number of clients. Every food package we distribute is carefully selected to ensure it meets Halal standards, offering not only nourishment but also comfort and peace of mind to those we serve.
At Halal Food Bank Canada, we believe that access to food is a right, not a privilege—and that dignity and faith should never be compromised. We are proud to be part of a movement that uplifts the community, one food parcel at a time.

Halal Food Bank Canada was born out of a deep commitment to serving those in need with dignity, compassion, and care. For several years, we operated a small-scale food bank under the umbrella of the Caring Canadians Society, quietly supporting families and individuals struggling to make ends meet. During this time, we came to a critical realization: there was a growing and unmet demand for Halal food—a basic need for many members of our diverse community that was often overlooked in traditional food support programs.

Recognizing this gap, we decided to take a bold step forward. We envisioned a dedicated food bank that could provide culturally appropriate, Halal-certified food items to those in need, without compromise. This led to the creation of Halal Food Bank Canada as a separate not-for-profit organization, allowing us to expand our services, outreach, and impact.

Amna Saleem, founder of Halal Food Bank, met and invited Dr. Munir ElKassem, a respected and prominent figure in our community, to join our initiative. His support and guidance have been instrumental in shaping our direction and amplifying our voice.

In October 2024, we officially received our not-for-profit status, marking a major milestone in our journey. Since then, we've launched our dedicated Halal food bank operations and have already seen a heartwarming response from the community. With the generous support of donors, volunteers, local businesses, and organizations, we've been able to serve a growing number of clients who rely on us for food security and peace of mind.
